Our story
Ananda, the iconic Russel Street boutique, was founded in Calcutta on 15th August 1974 with a singular vision: to revive and reimagine Bengal’s handloom sarees.
From the outset, the focus was on original design, bold colour experimentation, and uncompromising quality. Master weavers from Phulia and Dhaniakhali collaborated to reinterpret classic styles using new yarns and techniques, giving rise to the iconic Ananda Tangail, treasured by generations of Bengali women.
Innovation and tradition
Designers introduced distinctive motifs and fresh colour patterns across a range of fabrics, with block- and screen-printed silks becoming our signatures. Patterns such as kalka (paisley), scrolls, and bobby dots found their place in Calcutta women's fashion.
Five decades later, Ananda remains a one-of-a-kind boutique, offering cottons, silks, chiffons, crêpe de chines, Kanjivarams, ikkats, and Benarasis, crafted by award-winning weavers for discerning customers in India and around the world.
Looking into the future
